About

Hi, my name is Tahlia Newland. I’m a book reviewer,  author who writes young adult/adult metaphysical fantasy and magical realism, a mask maker and an extremely casual high school teacher.

The articles here are ripples in the water of my mind. Some of these thought-trails, ephemeral symbols for reality, aim to help you notice your own internal ripples, and encourage you to let them settle, so that the water of your mind may still and reveal its natural clarity and depth.  Some articles will encourage you to revel in or laugh at your ripples, some might act like signposts to point you to the place beyond thought and help you to live there in awareness.

I’ve studied philosophy of one kind or other my whole life. I grew up an Anglican but left the church in my teens when I couldn’t find satisfactory answers to my questions. While I trained as a teacher, I studied  Jung, Zen, the Goddess principle and various other systems of thought. After that, during my time as a dancer and performance artist, I spent around ten years studying Jane Roberts’ works on the nature of reality.

After Jane Roberts’ death, I discovered  The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rinpoche and have been his student  since 1998.   Since then, I have undertaken extensive studies in meditation and Buddhist philosophy and completed advanced practices in Tibetan Buddhism. I’m also an instructor for Rigpa Australia and write occasional blog posts for the What Meditation Really Is website.  I considers that, at their deepest level of understanding, all religions are different paths to the same ultimate truth and that when science goes deep enough into the nature of reality, it will find the same truth.

I live with my husband and daughter in an Australia rainforest south of the beautiful city of Sydney.
